Zero Green Ice Initiative
For the Ouray Ice Festival
The Ouray Ice Park is excited to continue the second year of the Ouray Ice Park Green Ice Initiative. As energy and natural resources are becoming increasing limited commodities, we feel it is essential to reduce the environmental impact of our enjoyment of the sport of ice climbing. By its nature, the Ouray Ice Park is an excellent use of local available resources. We’ve got loads of vertical relief and gravity fed liquid-soon-to-be-frozen water!
Again for the 2010 Ouray Ice Festival, we plan to greatly reduce our eco-footprint through recycling, composting, and reduction. New Belgium Brewing Company has provided an excellent example of sustainable corporate vision and will be supplying beer and corn-based compostable cups for the festival once again. We hope that all festival participants will join in our mission to responsibly recreate.
WHAT WE WILL PROVIDE:
1. Strategic Trash/Compost/Recycling Stations located at the Ice Park and the Ouray Community Center.
2. “Green Team” trash ambassador volunteers on hand to make the process of waste reduction pain-free.
3. We will be doing a write-up in the Festival Guide of all related “green” efforts and would like to include any information of sponsor/vendor sustainability plans.
WHAT WE ASK OF YOU:
1. Before even arriving at the Festival, reduce the “stuff” that you need to bring with you. Think lightweight Alpine Style!
2. While at the Festival, please sort your waste stream (recyclables/compostables/etc and get it into the right container. Look for Green Team volunteers for more info at the event.
3. We require all food vendors to use 100% compostable materials on the consumer side. Compostable food containers and packaging is widely available and competitively priced.
4. Pack it in, pack it out. If you have leftover promotional materials, equipment, etc, please try to take it with you to the next magical event.
5. Provide input. If there are other things that we can do as part of a responsible climbing community, please let us know!
We will track our progress and improvements over past years and will post the results on our website following the festival. Stay tuned.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
