Inside the Carefully Cultivated World of Ice Farming

Driving through the tiny mountain town of Ouray in southwest Colorado (population 1,000), you’d never guess the picturesque enclave is home to one of the world’s largest ice climbing parks. With nearly 200 different climbing routes and 17,000 vertical feet of terrain along the mile-long Uncompahgre Gorge, Ouray Ice Park is a dream destination for both beginners and veteran ice climbers alike...

So Chill: The Ice Farmer of Colorado

The Ouray Ice Park is a manmade ice climbing venue operated in a spectacular natural gorge near Ouray, Colo. “Ice farmer” Alexander Bianchi crafts all of the ice used on the wall. We caught up with this cold customer to get the story behind his slick creations.

Great Big Story is a video network dedicated to the untold, overlooked & flat-out amazing. Humans are capable of incredible things & we're here to tell their stories. When a rocket lands in your backyard, you get in.

Only in Colorado: In Ouray, they’re growing a different kind of crop

Crazy. Dirty. Hippies.

That’s who would show up. There might be 15 or 20 – tops. And surely they wouldn’t be spending any money in town.

That was the prevailing gut reaction when the town of Ouray, and a handful of local decision makers, were presented with the notion that a few naturally-occurring ice climbing routes inside the Uncompahgre Gorge should be enhanced, added to and – for lack of a better term – formalized. Invest in the ice – that was the suggestion. Bill Whitt was going with the Field of Dreams Theory: If you build it, they will come...

Ouray Ice Festival 2015

Well, last week we were at the 2015 Ouray Ice Festival, in Ouray, Colorado.  There were a lot of Subarus in town, that’s for sure. We passed out a bunch of stickers and other swag to our fellow Ice Fest attendees. I got into town a little in advance of our main part on Wednesday. I ran into my friends Erik Wellborn and Marcus Donaldson who are ambassadors for NW Alpine. They invited me along with them the following morning to climb the Racing Stripe (Left) up in the valley above town...

Adventure 101: Ice Climbing in Ouray

Chatter about the world’s top ice climbing spots will always circle back to Ouray, a sleepy town in southwestern Colorado where more than 20 years ago, a few visionary climbers started teasing streams of water down the walls of a steep, shadowy gorge...

Ice Climbing in Colorado's Ouray Ice Park

Jared Ogden, one of the country's top climbers, could have climbed this pitch from the bottom, pulling his protective rope along with him. But here, his rope is anchored from above. This method of "top roped" protection is easier, faster, and safer to rig. The top rope anchors in Colorado's Ouray Ice Park make ice climbing much more accessible. Once a top rope is set, you can climb relatively stress free and just have fun...

Trip Advisor Reviews of the Ouray Ice Park

“The best place in the world to learn how to climb steep ice.”

It gets busy but that is for a reason. Climbing on steep ice can initially be a frightening undertaking, it takes time and practice to get the required skills. The beauty of the Ice Park is that you can top rope to your hearts content and so acquire those skills with a relative degree of safety. (it's still climbing though,...
