Closing Day – March 30, 2014

By: admin | Posted on March 30, 2014

March 30, 2014

The Park will close today at 4:00 pm for the season.  The 2013/14 season has been amazing.  Thank you to everyone who visited, supported, and volunteered this season.  This incredible resource wouldn’t be possible without you.

After today, no access will be permitted below the canyon rim.  As ice climbs continue to deteriorate, hazards such as falling ice and rising water levels become more prevalent.  Please respect all closures.  We expect to open access once again for the summer season around May 1st.

There is still plenty of time to enjoy one last backcountry climb for the season.

Conditions Update – Closing Date Set!

By: admin | Posted on March 21, 2014

March 21, 2014

Another amazing season has come and nearly passed for the Park.  The Operations Committee and Ice Farming Team as decided upon a closing date for the 2013/14 season.  The Park will close at the end of the climbing day on Sunday, March 30, 2014.  We wish to thank all of the amazing guests, supporters, volunteers, & staff for making this season truly remarkable.  The dedicated team of Directors & Staff are already hard at work planning for next season.

Now is the perfect time to sneak in that last trip to Ouray for this season.  Conditions in the Park are exceptional for this time of year.  The South end of the Park remains open.  There are localized closures in the Trestle/ Mixed Alcove area as well as the Deep South out in South Park.  Reports from climbers visiting recently indicate the cold temps at night have made for high quality climbing.  The Farming Team also applied water on one particularly cool evening.  This really helped freshen things up in areas like the School Room & South Park.

Water levels in the canyon have been rising most afternoons.  Please maintain a high level of awareness during all times while climbing in the Park.

It’s not too late to become and Individual Member or the Ouray Ice Park.  This amazing resource is FREE to enjoy…but not to operate.  The Ouray Ice Park is 100% donor funded.  Become a Member today!

Conditions Update – March 20, 2014

By: admin | Posted on March 20, 2014

March 20, 2014

Mother Nature continues to do her part helping us keep the Park in good condition for spring ice climbing enthusiasts.  The days are long, the crowds are minimal, and the ice is blue and glassy.  Nighttime temps have been dipping well below freezing.  The Ice Farmers have been able to apply more water during certain nights this past week.

We have yet to set a closing date for the Park this season.  The Operations Committee is discussing the matter this week.  We will post the specific date as soon as a decision is made.  Until then, get your axe & gear down to Ouray.

Conditions Update – March 13, 2014

By: admin | Posted on March 13, 2014

March 13, 2014

Perfect spring conditions!

Cool nights have allowed the Farming Team to spray more water.  We really do not intend to build more ice as much as repair what is already there.  As a result, climbing in the South End of the Park remains quite enjoyable.  Two small areas are becoming more sun affected.  The Mixed Alcove/ Trestle area and the Deep South see a substantial amount of direct UV radiation.  The narrows between Deep South and the rest of South Park is no longer passable.

Access in the bottom of the canyon is really nice right now.  Some of the canyon access routes and trails along the rim are becoming very icy as a result of the melt/ freeze cycle occurring lately.  Please respect all “Climber Only Area” signage and wear appropriate personal protective equipment when entering these areas.

Many climbers are asking about a “closing date”.  We have not yet set one for this season.  Conditions are so favorable right now, we hesitate to suggest a specific date.  Please watch this blog for the most up-to-date information regarding Park conditions.

Conditions Update – March 6, 2014

By: admin | Posted on March 6, 2014

March 6, 2014

In spite of short cool periods following the small  snow storms we’ve been having, the North end of the Park has taken quite a beating during the past week or so.  Everyday we have needed to close more individual routes on the North end.  Yesterday we witnessed several natural collapses in areas we already had closed.

We decided last night to close the North end from the Lower Bridge north, or downstream toward town.  All areas downstream of the Lower Bridge are closed for the season.  This includes all travel below the canyon rim.  Please do not enter closed areas for any reason.  If you have questions about closures please feel free to email info@ourayicepark.com.

The South end continues to have plenty of high quality climbing.  We expect to see localized closures on the South end over the next couple weeks.  These will be areas receiving more direct UV radiation.

Conditions Update

By: admin | Posted on March 2, 2014

March 2, 2012

Despite unseasonably warm temperatures the ice here at the Park remains in good condition. A mild rain yesterday morning turned to snow as the first climbers arrived at the park. It continued to snow most of the day and then gradually tapered off in the afternoon. With high’s in the upper 40’s and low temperatures at night barely below freezing we have found it difficult to make ice in the past few weeks. Early and mid-season we was a big ice production time, but most importantly, a very solid base of ice that we can now rely on to help us get through this warm spell.  Many guests are reporting are experiencing what we like to call “hero” ice in all areas of the park. The “hero” ice makes for solid sticks for your crampons and tools giving some people more confidence when climbing and the ability to get on steeper and longer routes without pumping out from overswinging. We have a few closures on the north end of the park.   The Stump wall has been closed completely.   We still have acres and acres of good terrain that is accessible and fun! Visit Ouray and experience some spring-like climbing. For those of you who find the Park to be a little too crowded during the early and mid-season, you will be pleased to find smaller crowds and excellent conditions now.  Have an Ice Day!

Conditions Update – Feb 25, 2014

Fat Fingers!

The weather continues to be PERFECT here in Ouray.  Day time temps are warm but the night time temps are dropping into the low 20′s.  This has allowed the Farming Team to continue to make excellent ice.  The river has been rising during late afternoon hours.  Please remain aware of water levels in the area you are climbing.  Access to the bottom of the gorge is still great.  The next few weeks should offer some of the best climbing conditions of the season.

We have a few routes closed on the North End that see excessive UV exposure.  The Stump Wall closed today for the season due to direct UV exposure.  Please respect closed areas.  There is plenty of other terrain to climb that is in great condition.

Conditions Update – Feb 21, 2014

By: admin | Posted on February 21, 2014

February 21, 2014 – FEM FEST Weekend!

Mother Nature has re-joined the Team to produce very favorable conditions for faming ice.  Dan and the crew were able to clear most of the snow from our recent storm and make ice last night.  The Kid’s Wall has totally transformed overnight.  We were able to run water through most of the Park and will continue to do so through the weekend.  The forecast looks perfect for our efforts, warm days and clear cold nights.

We hope to see everyone out this weekend as the Ice Park and Ouray Mountain Sports present the 2nd Annual Fem Fest.  Women climbing with women all weekend.  The entire Park remains open to all climbers, so don’t forget to bring the man.  Tonight at the Community Center, Janelle Smiley will deliver a spectacular slide show.  There will also be a silent auction & beer/ wine at the bar.  Doors open at 6:30.

Saturday evening at the Community Center will feature the Fashion Show, Climbing Betty Makeover, as well as live & silent auctions.  This is one evening you don’t want to miss!  Doors open at 6:00.

Both evenings will feature locally crafted beer from Ouray Brewery.  The generous folks from Ouray Brewery continue to be huge supporters of Ice Park events.  Gluten free?  The bar will also have vino available.

Conditions Update – Feb 19, 2014

By: admin | Posted on February 19, 2014

February 19, 2014

It seems like we may have made it through the warm spell with minimal negative impact on the Park.  The North end was affected a little more than the South end.  Both ends remain open for climbing.  Please continue to be vigilant on and around pillars and free hanging curtains.  Even though the temps will be dropping during the next few days, the transition could produce instability on some of the more fragile features.  The Farming Team is poised to take full advantage of cooler temps.  Expect conditions to improve over the coming weeks in the Park.

Many folks are inquiring about a possible closing date for this season.  With the current conditions and forecast, closing isn’t even on our radar.
