Current Condtions:
Well, it’s been unseasonably warm the last handful of days. Since last week’s report, we’ve been in a holding pattern to see what these warmer temps are doing to the ice. Some melt has occurred, obviously, but the park is still looking good. A few routes have had to be closed during this warm spell, yet all park areas remain open.
We’re anticipating cooler temps returning as we move through the weekend. Until then, the name of the game is climb early. Perhaps use a top belay to avoid dislodging ice onto your partner. Keep your head on a swivel and maybe bring a shell layer as the ice is becoming just a tad wet during current afternoon conditions.
It’s super mild out, and at the right times of the day the ice is offering good, sticky feet and tool placements. Be mindful if leading though, screws may show signs of melt out if you’re climbing in sunny areas, especially later in the day.
Think cold thoughts!
