Current Condtions:

Although the Park remains closed we wanted to update everyone on conditions again this week.

We continue to be very much at the mercy of Mother Nature. Winter thus far has been mild in the San Juans, and weather trends haven’t proven overly conducive to building the necessary volume of ice we’d like to see to safely open for public climbing. We’re frustrated and antsy, just like y’all.

After weeks of being unable to turn on sprayers, temperatures finally took a small dip this last week. Farmers fired up the system and began rebuilding what we lost. They have essentially been working from scratch. Overcoming warm day time temperatures and rocks holding onto residual heat has been challenging. Nevertheless, we were able to get a thin layer of ice rebuilding in most areas but we are still nowhere near what we need to open. We’re monitoring forecasts and paying close attention to temperatures here along the gorge, and we are hoping that noticeably colder overnights projected for several days beginning early next week will hold and allow us multiple consecutive nights of farming.

For now, continue to exercise patience. Check back here regularly for continuing updates as we monitor and manage the controllables day to day. We do hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday, a Happy New Year, and we hope to see all of you very soon!
