🧊 Current CONDITIONS
This week we were finally able to open several of the steep Five Fingers pillars, including The Bird, and a few other climbs in the Gullies and Between the Bridges. Unfortunately with highs in the 50s and nights above freezing, we haven’t been able to farm, and some of the sun affected climbs had to be closed.
Most of the ice in the park is in excellent hero condition, if a little wet in the afternoons. There is quite a lot of ice in the park right now and it has a tendency to insulate itself, and the melt/freeze cycles are doing a lot to repair the ice and move water around, even if we aren’t farming.
We have noticed a little more small icefall than usual, especially in New Funtier. We are now recommending top belay in a lot of areas, especially New Funtier, but anywhere the belayer feels vulnerable, top belay is a great option! The New Funtier Canyon Access is also extra spicy right now and while it is not yet closed, we would recommend avoiding it or being very careful while passing through overhead hazard areas.
The Two Eyed Dog Lead Only is now closed due to significant ice fall hazard, as that whole wall is in the sun for a good part of the day. You’ll also see new spot closures in various areas of the park. Remember when we close an anchor, the route below it is closed, and it’s not a good idea to redirect a different anchor or otherwise creatively build an anchor to get on that climb. We close routes for many different reasons, right now routes that are closed either never came in or pose a safety hazard (or both!)
Park Staff is constantly evaluating climbs for safety and viability, and checking the weather for the latest on the incoming storms. We’re hoping colder temps are coming soon to shore things up and keep our climbs in good condition for a while longer!
We’re so excited to see you all back in the Park. Come say hi to our Rangers at Dick’s Chalet and don’t forget to Become a Member and help support the Park and get in early every day :)
