Climbing
open Climbing areas
We are aware that finding open climbing can be very challenging during the Ouray Ice Festival. We have over 100 Clinics offered that take up a lot of routes. We’ve done our best this year to balance keeping certain climbing areas open for recreational climbing. The following areas open to the public:
Deep South
New Funtier
Most of Pic O’ The Vic (split use - please respect clinic space)
Lead Only (still Lead Only during Ice Fest)
Between the Bridges (top belay only)
Please remember that access to all open climbing zones is strictly conditions dependent. While our ice farmers work tirelessly to maximize climbable terrain, specific areas or routes may be closed on short notice due to temperature fluctuations, ice stability, or active farming operations. For your safety and the longevity of the ice, please respect all closure signage in the Gorge. If a route is roped off or signed as closed, do not climb it.
Guided open Climbing areas
We’re offering guided open climbing areas this year. This open-format is designed to provide a low-stakes, low-pressure space for climbers of all levels to get quality time on the ice. Led by expert guides, this session prioritizes mileage and practice over formal instruction. Participants will have the opportunity to climb multiple laps, refine their flow, and build confidence under the safety and supervision of professional guides. No matter where you’re at, guides will be there to help you level up.
Demo Wall
The demo wall will be open to climbing with all gear provided to get you on the ice for your first time. If you’re not sure about ice climbing and just want to give it a try then head on over! We would love to show you the ropes and get you comfortable climbing. If you feel confident after climbing and want to learn more, head on over and sign up for a Clinic where our expert athletes and guides will teach you everything from the basics to the most advanced climbing techniques.
What you need
If you plan on climbing at the Demo Wall you need to sign the Ouray Ice Park waiver. Fortunately you can do so right on your phone in less than 5 minutes. Head over to our Waiver Page to get started!
